Patagonia Sur is planting 3,400 trees for the 2013 SAG Awards

Screen Actors Guild Awards® and Patagonia Sur 

to Plant Forest in Chilean Patagonia as Part of Expanded Partnership to Fight Climate Change

The Screen Actors Guild Awards is expanding efforts to further reduce its carbon footprint thanks to a unique reforestation partnership with Chile’s Patagonia Sur (patagoniasur.com), a for-profit conservation company founded by American entrepreneur Warren Adams that is a leader in private land conservation, reforestation and carbon offsetting in South America.

Though Hollywood and Chilean Patagonia are thousands of miles apart, these two unique regions are being linked in an exclusive effort to battle climate change.  In 2012, on behalf of the SAG Awards, Patagonia Sur planted a grove of 45 native-species trees on degraded lands in Patagonia, Chile, to help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thereby helping to fight the threat posed by climate change.

For the 2013 SAG Awards, Patagonia Sur is planting 3,400 trees — two for each of the 1,700 guests at the Post SAG Awards Gala hosted by People magazine and the Entertainment Industry Foundation. In their gala gift bags, guests will find a code enabling them to log on patagoniasuroffsets.com/SagAwardsForest/ where they will be able to affix their names to the trees being planted in their honor within a part of Chilean Patagonia, now called the SAG Awards Forest. Viewers inspired by these efforts can also evaluate their personal carbon footprint by going to the same website.

This year's expanded partnership with Patagonia Sur continues the SAG Awards’ commitment to green practices. In October 2012, for the fourth consecutive year, the SAG Awards was honored with the Environmental Media Association’s Green Seal, recognizing the production’s outstanding efforts to implement sustainable initiatives and promote environmental awareness, while creating a nearly zero waste event.

What's in a tree? Actually quite a lot when it comes to reducing greenhouse gases. Trees capture, or sequester, carbon from the atmosphere in the process known as photosynthesis.

In 2010, Patagonia Sur launched a reforestation project at its 8,000-acre Valle California property in the Palena region of southern Chile, with the aim of enhancing biodiversity and selling carbon offsets. The company is planting a mix of native beech trees on degraded lands that were previously cleared for pastureland by early settlers. A single tree planted in Valle California will sequester nearly half a ton of carbon over an 80-year period.

Patagonia Sur's Valle California project, which planted one million trees in 2012, is the first in Chile to use native species to generate carbon offsets, and has been officially accredited by the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) by meeting three key criteria: measurability, permanence and independent verification. That means SAG Awards attendees will offset 1,700 tons of carbon, negating their carbon footprint.

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 20, 2012)  – Ballots for the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® nominations will be mailed to this year’s SAG Awards film and television nominating committees on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012.

The Screen Actors Guild Award—The Actor®—is presented for outstanding performances in motion pictures and primetime television. The nominees for performances in 2012, including the distinctive ensemble awards and the stunt ensemble honors, will be chosen by two separate film and television nominating panels, each comprised of 2,100 members from across the United States that were randomly selected this spring. Submissions closed on October 25. Requests for nomination consideration in a category of the actor’s choosing were submitted by actors or, with the actor’s permission, by producers, studios/networks, agents, managers, or publicists.

Votes for nominees may be cast online or via mailed paper ballot. The SAG Awards’ official teller, Integrity Voting Systems, must receive votes by noon (PT) on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012. Nominations for the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, telecast live on TNT at 9:00 a.m. (ET) / 6:00 a.m. (PT) and webcast live on tnt.tv and tbs.com, preceded by the stunt ensemble honors nominations at 8:50 a.m. (ET) / 5:50 a.m. (PT), webcast live on tnt.tv and tbs.com.

Of the top industry honors presented to performers, only the SAG Awards are selected entirely by actors’ peers in SAG-AFTRA. Recipients of the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be announced at ceremonies on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, simulcast live from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. (ET), 5 p.m. (PT), 7 p.m. (CT) and 6 p.m. (MT). Recipients of the stunt ensemble honors will be announced from the SAG Awards red carpet at 6:15 p.m., (PT) / 3:15 p.m. (ET) during the Red Carpet Pre-Show webcast on tnt.tv and tbs.com from 6-8 p.m. (PT) / 3-5 p.m. (PT).

Final voting information will be mailed via postcard to all eligible voting members of SAG-AFTRA on Dec. 31, 2012.  Online voting is encouraged. Paper ballots will be made available only upon request, which must be made by Monday, Jan. 14, 2013.  All votes must be received at Integrity Voting Systems by noon on Friday, Jan. 25. Results will be sealed until they are opened onstage at the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony.

Lisa Rinna (1963):	An American actress. She is best known for her roles as Billie Reed on Days of our Lives, Taylor McBride on Melrose Place, and most recently as the host of SoapNet's Soap Talk.Rinna married actor Harry Hamlin in 1997. They have two daughters, Delilah Belle (born 1998) and Amelia Gray (born 2001). They have performed together in a number of television and film productions, including portraying a married couple on the first season of the television series Veronica Mars. She has acknowledged having plastic surgery and using botox and juvederm; although she remains fond of botox, she has said that using juvederm was a mistake. Rinna, Hamlin, and their daughters recently met pop sensations the Jonas Brothers at a private concert at The Roxy and Miley Cyrus on the set of her show Hannah Montana.

Lil' Kim (1975):	Rapper who had the highest ever debut for a female hip-hop artist in 1996. Kim began her career as a rapper in the early ‘90s when she joined the group Junior M.A.F.I.A. (Masters At Finding Intelligent Attitudes). After gaining acclaim for her part in the group, Kim decided to break out on her own. Her debut album "Hard Core" (1996), was produced by Sean Puffy Combs and featured the number one single "No Time." In June 2000, Kim released the album "Notorious K.I.M." as a tribute to the Notorious B.I.G., who helped her get her start in the music business. Richie Sambora (1960):	Guitarist/songwriter who is most famous for being a member of the band "Bon Jovi." Sambora joined Bon Jovi in 1983, and the group hit it big in 1986 with the release of "Slippery When Wet." The album spawned the number one singles "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin’ on a Prayer," and sold over 10 million copies. Bon Jovi became one of the world’s most popular rock bands, and the 1988 release of their album, "New Jersey," kept them riding high at the top of the charts. Soon after, the band decided to pursue solo projects, and Sambora went on to release "Stranger in this Town" in 1991, and "Undiscovered Soul" in 1998.

Sela Ward (1956):	Actress who received an Emmy Award for Best Actress in 1994, for her role as Teddy on the TV drama "Sisters" (1990-96). Ward first began starring on the small screen, playing Hillary Adams on the series "Emerald Point, N.A.S." (1983-84). While the show was short-lived, Ward’s career was just beginning, and she soon landed a part starring opposite Tom Hanks in the film Nothing in Common (1986). Ward continued to have a successful film career with credits including Hello again (1987), The Fugitive (1993), My Fellow Americans (1996), 54 (1998), Passion’s Way (1999) and the TV movies "Catch a Falling Star" (2000) and "The Badge" in 2002. She recently starred in the TV drama series "Once and Again" (1999-2002), and added to her blockbuster titles with the movie The Day After Tomorrow in 2004.

Wolfgang Puck (1949):	Chef-restaurateur who brought new life to California cuisine by adding a French twist to common ingredients. Before coming to the US in 1973, Puck was a chef at the Hotel de Paris in Monaco and Maxim’s in Paris. Puck took Los Angeles by storm, and his stint as chef and part owner of Ma Maison was a delicious success. Puck went on to publish his first cookbook in 1982, Modern French Cooking for the American Kitchen, and founded the trendy restaurant, Spago, later that year. Since then Puck has opened Chinois in Santa Monica, Postrio in San Francisco, Granita in Malibu and the more affordable, Wolfgang Puck Pizza Cafes, across the US.

Kevin Bacon (1958):	Actor who is most famous for putting on his dancing shoes in the 1984 film Footloose. Bacon began his acting career on the stage, making his Broadway debut in "Slab Boys," a play that also starred then-unknown actors Sean Penn and Val Kilmer. After winning a starring role on the silver screen in the 1982 movie "Diner," Bacon knew that he wanted to have a career in film. Some of Bacon’s credits include She’s Having a Baby (1988), Flatliners (1990), JFK (1991), He Said, She Said (1991), A Few Good Men (1992), Apollo 13 (1995), Sleepers (1996), Hollow Man (2000), and Trapped (2002). Anjelica Huston (1951):	Actress who garnered a whole new audience of fans when she starred as Morticia Addams in The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values in 1993. Huston began acting as a teenager in father John Huston’s film A Walk with Love and Death (1969). While taking a brief absence from the big screen to model in New York, Huston made an Oscar-winning return to film in 1985, with her performance in Prizzi’s Honor. Huston has given stellar performances in films including Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), The Grifters (1990), The Perez Family (1995), Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Blood Work (2002) and last summer's Daddy Day Care. Huston directed her first feature film, Agnes Browne, in 1999.

Eva Green (1980):	A French actress, raised in Paris and living partly in London. She has been noted by Vogue for her "killer looks, intelligence and modesty", and described by The Independent as "gothic, quirky, and sexy". The daughter of actress Marlène Jobert, Green performed in theatre before making her film debut in The Dreamers (2003), which generated controversy over her numerous nude scenes. She achieved greater fame for her parts in Kingdom of Heaven (2005), and in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale, for which she won a BAFTA. She has also modeled for numerous brands.

Edie Falco (1963):	An American television, film and stage actress, known for her lead role as Carmela Soprano on the HBO series The Sopranos. Falco was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Judith Anderson, an actress, and Frank Falco, a jazz drummer. Her father is Italian American and her mother Swedish American.. She was raised in Northport and West Islip, on Long Island. She has an adopted son named Anderson Falco and an adopted daughter named Macy Falco. Her first big break in films was a small speaking role in the 1994 Woody Allen film Bullets Over Broadway. Her friendship with former SUNY Purchase classmate Eric Mendelsohn, who was the assistant to Allen's costume designer, Jeffrey Kurland, helped her to be cast in the role. Mendelsohn would go on to direct Falco in his feature film Judy Berlin, for which he won "Best Director" honors at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2003, Edie was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she subsequently survived. She chose not to make the news public for approximately one year.

Huey Lewis (1950):	An American musician who rose to fame in the eighties, releasing 17 Top 40 singles with his band "The News." Lewis originally started out in music in the country group "Clover." Longing to play good old-fashioned rock and roll, Lewis helped form the group "American Express," which later came to be "Huey Lewis and The News." In 1982, the group released the album, "Picture This," but it was their next release, "Sports," that made Lewis a superstar. "Sports" went 7-times platinum, and included the Top 10 hits "Heart and Soul" and "The Heart of Rock & Roll." Lewis then recorded the number 1 single, "The Power of Love," for the film, Back To The Future, and went on to release another number 1 single, "Stuck With You," in 1986. The band released "Plan B" in 2001 - its first album of new material in ten years. Huey and the band are on tour this summer.

Katherine Helmond (1933):	An actress who was the sexy grandmother, Mona Robinson, on the ‘80s hit sitcom, "Who’s The Boss" (1984-92) and who currently appears in a guest role as Debra's mother, Lois, on "Everybody Loves Raymond." Helmond began her career on the New York stage and earned a Tony nomination in 1973, for her performance in "The Great God Brown." While Helmond may be best known for her role as Jessica Tate on the sitcom, "Soap" (1977-81), she has also appeared in TV movies such as "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" (1974), "Getting Married" (1978), "Rosie: The Rosemary Clooney Story" (1982), "Deception: A Mother’s Secret" (1991), "Mr. St. Nick" (2002), "Beethoven's 5th" (2003) and the film, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, in 1998.

Jason Dolley (1991):	An American actor. He is best known for his roles on different Disney Channel projects. These include playing Newton "Newt" Livingston III on the Disney Channel Original Series, Cory in the House, Virgil Fox in the Disney Channel Original Movie Minutemen and Pete Ivey in the Disney Channel Original Movie Hatching Pete. He began acting at the age of 11, getting the lead role in the award winning short film entitled Chasing Daylight. He was then cast by director Mel Gibson to be 13-year-old T.J. Savage on the ABC TV series Complete Savages. After Complete Savages was cancelled, he starred in the film Saving Shiloh as Marty Preston, in the DCOM Read it and Weep as Connor Kennedy and in the film The Air I Breathe as a young Pleasure. In 2006, Dolley appeared in Duracell's commercial "Trusted Everywhere" Campaign "Amazon". Dolley was part of the Yellow team in the second edition of the Disney Channel Games, broadcasted in summer 2007. In 2008, he was in the third edition of the Disney Channel Games on the Green Team.

Ryan Hansen (1980):	An American actor, most well known for having portrayed Dick Casablancas on Veronica Mars and Nolan on Friday the 13th. Hansen was born and raised in San Diego, California, but has since moved with his wife Amy to L.A. Hansen began acting with guest starring roles on series such as Grounded for Life, That's So Raven, and Las Vegas. In 2004, Hansen auditioned for the role of Duncan Kane on Veronica Mars but lost out to Teddy Dunn. However, Rob Thomas told him to try out for the role of Dick Casablancas. Also in 2008, Hansen appeared in the CCT original musical Alice as Trevor McKnight/ White Night. The show opened on July 31st and ran through August 10th, in San Diego.
