Feature films eligible for a Writers Guild Award were exhibited theatrically for at least one week in Los Angeles during 2012 and were written under the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA) or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of the Writers Guild of Canada, Writers Guild of Great Britain, Irish Playwrights & Screenwriters Guild, or the New Zealand Writers Guild. Theatrical screenplays produced under the jurisdiction of the WGA or an affiliate Guild must have been submitted for WGA awards consideration.
Documentaries eligible for a Writers Guild Award featured an onscreen writing credit and were exhibited theatrically in Los Angeles or New York for one week during 2012. While credited documentary writers were required to join the WGAW’s Nonfiction Writers Caucus or the WGAE’s Nonfiction Writers Caucus to be considered, scripts need not have been written under WGA jurisdiction to be eligible for awards consideration.
The Writers Guild Awards honor outstanding writing in film, television, new media, videogames, news, radio and promotional writing, and graphic animation. The awards will be presented jointly in all competitive categories during simultaneous ceremonies on Sunday, February 17, 2013, in New York at the B.B. Winners will be announced at the Spirit Awards on Saturday, February 23, 2013. The awards ceremony will be held as a daytime luncheon in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, and the premiere broadcast will air later that evening at 10:00 pm ET/PT on IFC. Winners of the Spirit Awards Filmmaker Grants will be highlighted during the awards ceremony and announced at the Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominee Brunch on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood.
The Spirit Awards Nominating Committees selected nominees from 299 submissions this year and applied the following guidelines in determining the nominations: uniqueness of vision, original and provocative subject matter, economy of means (with particular attention paid to total production cost & individual compensation), and percentage of financing from independent sources. The Spirit Awards Nominating Committee is comprised of writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, actors, critics, casting directors, festival programmers, and other working film professionals.
As the first event to exclusively honor independent film, the Film Independent Spirit Awards has made a name for itself as the premier awards show for the independent film community. Artists who have received industry recognition first at the Spirit Awards include Joel & Ethan Coen, Spike Lee, Oliver Stone, Ashley Judd, Robert Rodriguez, David O. Russell, Edward Burns, Aaron Eckhart, Neil LaBute, Darren Aronofsky, Spike Jonze, Charlie Kaufman, Hilary Swank, Marc Forster, Todd Field, Christopher Nolan, Zach Braff, Amy Adams, Lena Dunham and many more.

ABOUT THE FILM INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS
Now in its 28th year, the Film Independent Spirit Awards is a celebration honoring artist-driven films made with an
economy of means by filmmakers who embody independence and originality. The Spirit Awards has become the
vanguard event in independent film, recognizing the achievements of American independent filmmakers and promoting

84th Academy Awards Nominations Announced

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced
today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President
Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence

Sherak and Lawrence, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her lead
performance in “Winter’s Bone,” announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 Award categories
at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media
representatives. Lists of nominations in all categories were then distributed to the media in
attendance and online via the official Academy Awards website, www.oscar.com.

respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In
the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are
selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to
select the Best Picture nominees.
Nominations ballots were mailed to the 5,783 voting members in late December and
were returned directly to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the international accounting firm,
for tabulation.
Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for
members this weekend at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will
be held at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York
and the San Francisco Bay Area.
All active and life members of the Academy are eligible to select the winners in all
categories, although in five of them – Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film,
Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject and Foreign Language Film – members
can vote only if they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on
Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®,
and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET.
The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries
worldwide.

Film Independent’s 25th Spirit Awards Nomination Announcements
December 1, 2009 FILM INDEPENDENT HOTEL SOFITEL, BEVERLY HILLS, CA Film Independent’s Spirit Awards is a celebration honoring films made by filmmakers who embody independence and originality. Televised in millions of homes and covered internationally by the press, the Spirit Awards has become the vanguard event in independent film, recognizing the achievements of independent filmmakers and promoting independent film to a wider audience. The Spirit Awards nominations are chosen on the basis of uniqueness of vision, original, provocative subject matter, economy of means (with particular attention paid to total production cost and individual compensation) and percentage of financing from independent sources. Nominees were announced in the following categories: Best Feature, Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay, Best Director, Best Screenplay, John Cassavetes Award (given to the best feature made for a budget under $500,000), Best Male Lead, Best Female Lead, Best Supporting Male, Best Supporting Female, Best Cinematography, Best Foreign Film, and Best Documentary. In honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Spirit Awards, this year’s winners will be unveiled at a late-night celebration on Friday, March 5, 2010, at LA Live’s panoramic event deck in downtown Los Angeles. The ceremony will air live and uncut on Friday, March 5, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. PST/11:00 p.m. EST on IFC (Independent Film Channel). This year's ceremony is sponsored by Premier Sponsors IFC, ELLE, Piaget, Acura, Jameson Irish Whiskey and Principal Sponsor Netflix.
