July 16, 2009 THE ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS AND SCIENCES LEONARD H. GOLDENSON THEATER, NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA The 61st Primetime Emmy Award Nominations were announced this morning by Chandra Wilson from "Grey's Anatomy" and Jim Parsons from "The Big Bang Theory". The name "Emmy" was chosen as a feminization of "immy". It was a nickname that was used for the image orthicon tubes that were very common in the early television cameras. The stauette was designed to depict a winged woman who is holding an atom. This has become the symbol of the TV Academy's goal of supporting and lifting the art and science of television. The wings represent the muse of art, the atom which is the electron of science. This year the Primetime Emmy Awards introduces a new show category, "Outstanding Variety Program". Both Chandra Wilson and Jim Parsons were nominated and were very surprised as they their names were announced. It is very interesting to see who is going head to head in the Best Guest Actress in A Comedy Series - Betty vs. Jennifer. |
