ASPCA “Dog of the Year” Fiona
Abandoned in a trash heap behind an auto body shop in South Los Angeles, Calif., Fiona, an 11-year-old poodle mix, was sick, covered in dirt, matted, infested with fleas and blind in both eyes. Fortunately, Audrey and Eldad Hagar, founders of Los Angeles-based animal rescue group Hope for Paws, came to Fiona’s aid. They cleaned and cared for her and took her to a veterinary ophthalmologist who confirmed her vision in one eye could be restored with surgery. Hope for Paws posted Fiona’s rescue video online, hoping to raise enough money for the expensive surgery. With the help of hundreds of donors all over the world, they raised the funds for her surgery, and Fiona was soon adopted into the loving home of Michele and Chris Gentry of Los Angeles, CA and three poodle sisters. Fiona’s miraculous story of survival has since garnered more than 5.5 million views online, a testament to what can be accomplished when homeless animals get a second chance.

PIL to Perform a One-Night-Only Show at Club Nokia in LA

Photo © Paul Heartfield

"...a sprawling, hour-long musical journey that both evokes the PiL of old and pushes into new territory. A mixture of big,
bassy, fast-moving tracks, some slower guitar pieces and Lydon's at times-unaccompanied voice, This is PiL has an
epic album feel without being overblown.”
--Edward Krudy, Reuters (October 18, 2012)

PUBLIC IMAGE LTD have announced three in-store appearances across the U.S.: Wednesday, October 24 at Amoeba in San Francisco 6:00pm (1855 Haight St), Thursday, Nov 1 at Good Records in Dallas 12:30pm (1808 Greenville Ave.) and Saturday, Nov 3 at the Fun Fun Fun Fest-Waterloo Records Tent in Austin 4:00pm (Auditorium Shores, 920 W. Riverside Dr.). The band is currently in the midst of their first U.S. tour since their 2010 reunion trek which kicked off at Coachella. The group will hit Los Angeles’ Club Nokia for a one-night-only show Sunday, October 28. The night before, the iconic PiL frontman JOHN LYDON is set for a headlining DJ set at KCRW’s Halloween Masquerade Party in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 27 at Park Plaza Hotel. For more information, visit: http://www.kcrw.com/masquerade.

For fans that are unable to attend the shows, PiL will be live streaming their performance on Friday, October 26 in Reno, NV at the Knitting Factory Via Livestream. Visit: https://new.livestream.com/theknitreno/PiL.

The potent and eclectic PiL line-up featuring JOHN LYDON (vocals), LU EDMONDS (guitar), SCOTT FIRTH (bass) and BRUCE SMITH (drums) continues to garner rave reviews for their epic live sets which are not to be missed.

“The crowd swelled and danced in place to the hypnotic 'Warrior' as Lydon's bellows and barks echoed and intertwined with Edmonds's otherworldly sounding stabs of delayed and effected guitar.”

--David Von Bader, MIAMI NEW TIMES (October 8, 2012)

“Lydon and company delivered a two-hour plus set that turned out to be a sustained, Apocalypse Now descent into hell. From the propulsive opening attack on ‘This Is Not A Love Song’ through classic deep-groove diatribes like ‘Flowers Of Romance’ and ‘Death Disco’-both of them among the evening’s highlights--the group kept it dark and angry…The playing and pacing were inspired throughout, with recent material like ‘Deeper Water,’ ‘Reggie Song,’ and ‘Out of The Woods’ sounding even more urgent than on the group’s excellent latest release, This Is Pil. “

--Bernard Perusse, MONTREAL GAZETTE (October 18, 2012)

The group--described as “a musical force taking a jackhammer to pop music’s boundaries” (Phil Gallo, BILLBOARD, 5/19/12)--are touring in support of their new album, THIS IS PiL. It was released May 29 this year via their own PiL Official label, with distribution through Redeye in the U.S. and Cargo in the U.K. THIS IS PiL--the band’s first album of new music in 20 years--has generated rave reviews from critics and features new tracks such as “Deeper Water,” “Lollipop Opera,” “One Drop” and “Out of the Woods.” On October 1, a new AA side single titled “Out Of The Woods/Reggie Song” was released in CD, digital and as a special 12 inch Vinyl.

"Show People to Receive Star Treatment at the Academy

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a restored version of the comedic silent film "Show People" (1928) on Thursday, November 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.  Kevin Brownlow, who received an Honorary Award (an Oscar® statuette), will introduce the film, which was restored under his supervision and features a stereo musical score by composer Carl Davis.

Produced and directed by King Vidor, "Show People" served as a key inspiration for the 2011 Best Picture winner, "The Artist."  Venturing behind the scenes into Hollywood filmmaking of the 1920s, "Show People" features not only wonderfully comedic performances by Marion Davies and William Haines, but a unique string of cameo appearances by the biggest stars of the day, including Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and Norma Talmadge.  Davies stars as Peggy Pepper, who arrives in Hollywood from Georgia to claim the film stardom that her father believes is rightfully hers.  Haines portrays a comic performer who helps her find work even though Peggy sees herself as a "dramatic" actress.

Brownlow is a film historian and preservationist widely regarded as the preeminent historian of the silent film era.  His books include The Parade’s Gone By…; The War, the West, and the Wilderness; Hollywood: The Pioneers; Behind the Mask of Innocence; David Lean; and Mary Pickford Rediscovered.  Brownlow has written and directed such documentaries as "Hollywood," "Unknown Chaplin," "Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow," "Harold Lloyd: The Third Genius," "D.W. Griffith: Father of Film," "Cecil B. DeMille: American Epic," and "Garbo."  Most famous among his many silent film restoration projects is Abel Gance’s 1927 epic "Napoleon."

Tickets for "Show People" are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID, and may be purchased online at www.oscars.org, in person at the Academy box office, or by mail.  The Samuel Goldwyn Theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m.  Ticketed seating is unreserved.  For more information, call (310) 247-3600 or visit www.oscars.org.

Samsara Becomes Oscillosopes highest-grossing film since its inception in February 2008

HIT DOCUMENTARY SAMSARA BECOMES OSCILLOSCOPE'S
HIGHEST-GROSSING FILM EVER THEATRICALLY

October 14, 2012 - Oscilloscope Laboratories' release of Ron Fricke's and Mark Magidson's hit documentary SAMSARA (currently in theaters) has become the studio's highest-grossing film since its inception in February 2008. This weekend, SAMSARA surpassed the company's prior benchmark, 2011's WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, which totaled $1.74 MM at the domestic box office.

SAMSARA marks the third collaboration between Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson, whose award-winning films BARAKA and CHRONOS brought a new visual and musical artistry to theaters. Filmed over a period of five years in twenty-five countries on five continents, and shot on 70mm film, SAMSARA subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary. It explores the wonders of our world, from the mundane to the miraculous, combining breathtaking images with transcendent music to create a unique and powerful experience that infuses the ancient with the modern.

SAMSARA opened in New York and Seattle on August 24th to the highest per-screen-average of any documentary released in 2012 and fifth highest of any film for the year at that time - an impressive $38,111 per screen. The critically-praised film expanded to Los Angeles the following week and then nationwide, where it continues to perform, with many theaters yet to open. The film has grossed over 1.8MM as of October 14, 2012 (the filmmaker's previous effort, Baraka, took in $1.33MM by the end of its run).

Earlier this year, Oscilloscope's release of SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS, a documentary about the band LCD SOUNDSYSTEM's final concert at Madison Square Garden, grossed over $500k in primarily one-night-only showings around the country. SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS was the first Oscilloscope release since executives Dan Berger and David Laub took over at the helm of the company in May, following the passing of company founder Adam Yauch and the departure of David Fenkel.

Dan Berger and David Laub said, "We couldn't be more thrilled about the success of SAMSARA.  It's a great film that perfectly represents the kind of unique, audacious, and personal cinema for which Oscilloscope will always stand.  SAMSARA'S box office is a testament not only to the brilliant film Ron and Mark have made, but also to the hard work of everyone at O-Scope.  We will be celebrating with pizza and a clown."

On working with O-scope, Mark Magidson said, "It has been a privilege to witness first hand the work ethic and dedication the entire Oscilloscope team has demonstrated. Dan and David have guided the company through challenging circumstances with enthusiasm, hard work, and professionalism."

Robert DeLong Confirmed for the Echoplex in Los Angeles on October 15 and 29

GLASSNOTE ARTIST ROBERT DELONG CONFIRMED FOR ECHOPLEX LOS ANGELES RESIDENCY, CMJ, TOUR DATES WITH THE FAINT AND SNOWGLOBE

ALBUM ‘JUST MOVEMENT’ DUE OUT JANUARY 22, 2013
FEATURING UPCOMING SINGLE “GLOBAL CONCEPTS”

Robert DeLong photographed at 102.7 WEQX Pearlpalooza, Albany

Glassnote Entertainment Group recently announced the newest addition to the independent label’s roster with the worldwide signing of Los Angeles artist, Robert DeLong.   Now, the singer, songwriter, producer, programmer and drummer is ready to bring his engaging sound and vision on the road for a series of live events leading up to the release of his debut album JUST MOVEMENT January 22, 2013.

First up, DELONG will bring his one-man show to the Echoplex in Los Angeles on October 15 and 29.  In between, he will make several appearances during CMJ including the All Things Gold, KCRW Presents School Night, The Fader and Glassnote showcases.  In November, he’ll join The Faint on several of their west coast dates and round out his year with a main stage slot at SnowGlobe in Lake Tahoe December 30 with various dates in between.  All tour dates follow below.

At these shows, ROBERT DELONG will highlight material from JUST MOVEMENT, an electronic dance album with an evocative singer-songwriter sensibility that he wrote and produced over the course of the last two years.  One of the tracks is “Global Concepts,” which will be released officially as a single on iTunes October 30.  Albany’s alternative rock station WEQX recently added “Global Concepts” which has since become the station’s #1 most requested song.

DELONG, raised in the suburbs of Seattle, headed south to Los Angeles with a toolbox of Wii-motes, keyboards, and drums to develop a live rock show that CMJ Magazine claims worthy of “an 8-bit warrior, seamlessly creating danceable electro beats with his Wii Remote and Sega Genesis controller on par with the Chemical Brothers.”

DELONG began performing his genre-bending songs in 2010. He uses MIDI interfaces, a full drum set, drum pads, keyboards, laptops and game controllers, looping his music live to fuse electronic dance beats with striking melodies and lyrics with emotional heart.  As DELONG started playing more and more shows, most recently playing the Silver Lake Jubilee, The Starscape Festival in Baltimore, Maryland and opening for STRFKR, he immediately caught the attention of critics and fans alike. DELONG has also received radio play from influential rock stations such as KCRW and KROQ, where DELONG’s “Happy” (also to be featured on Just Movement) peaked at #4 on the latter’s Local’s Only show.

Drama, mystery, action and enduring love thread through a single story that unfolds in multiple timelines over the span of 500 years. Characters meet and reunite from one life to the next. Born and reborn.

As the consequences of their actions and choices impact one another through the past, the present and the distant future, one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

Everything is connected.

Academy Award® winners Tom Hanks ("Philadelphia," "Forrest Gump") and Halle Berry ("Monster's Ball") lead a stellar international cast that also includes Oscar® winner Jim Broadbent ("Iris"), Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, James D'Arcy, Xun Zhou, Keith David and David Gyasi, with Oscar® winner Susan Sarandon ("Dead Man Walking") and Hugh Grant. Each member of the ensemble appears in multiple roles as the story moves through time.

The film is written for the screen and directed by Lana Wachowski & Tom Tykwer & Andy Wachowski. The Wachowskis previously teamed as writers/directors of the groundbreaking "Matrix" trilogy; Tom Tykwer won an Independent Spirit Award and earned a BAFTA Award nomination as the director/writer of "Run Lola Run," and more recently directed the award-winning thriller "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer."

Based on the celebrated best-selling novel by David Mitchell, "Cloud Atlas" is produced by two-time Oscar® nominee Grant Hill ("The Thin Red Line," "The Tree of Life"), three-time BAFTA Award nominee Stefan Arndt ("The White Ribbon," "Goodbye Lenin!," "Run Lola Run"), Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy Wachowski. Philip Lee, Uwe Schott and Wilson Qiu serve as executive producers, with co-producers Peter Lam, Tony Teo and Alexander van Dülmen, and Gigi Oeri as associate producer.

Robert Cray Band & Kenny Wayne Shepherd to Appear at Club Nokia

LOS ANGELES’ CLUB NOKIA TO HOST

ROBERT CRAY BAND & KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17

TICKETS ON SALE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13

Los Angeles’ CLUB NOKIA has announced a Saturday, November 17 performance by blues icons the ROBERT CRAY BAND and KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD.  Tickets go on sale this Saturday, October 13 at 10am.

As a five-time Grammy award winning, singer/songwriting guitar legend, it would be hard to overstate Robert Cray's impact on rock, rhythm & blues. He is considered "one of the greatest guitarists of his generation" (Music Critic, Steve Matteo) and since his 1980 album debut Who's Been Talkin, Cray has been inviting audiences along on his epic musical journey--breaking through the pop ceiling with his gate crashing/blues-edged trademark sound, distinct playing style and daring innovations.  He has performed alongside blues titans Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton and B.B. King- touring extensively with both Collins and Clapton and has his own line of Fender Signature Guitars. Cray has also worked with legends Tina Turner, Keith Richards, Chuck Berry, Bonnie Raitt, friend and fellow guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn and Willie Dixon, to name a few and his songs have been covered by many including, BB King, Clapton, and Tony Bennett. Featured in Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues series, Cray has also appeared in Tina Turner's TV special “Break Every Rule,” the Chuck Berry tribute “Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll,” and the Rolling Stones' pay-per-view video “Voodoo Lounge.” Along with his Grammy wins, Robert Cray has released 20 award-winning multi-platinum albums, received 15 Grammy nominations, and with the Robert Cray Band, has performed thousands of sold-out shows worldwide.

Utter the phrase "young blues guitarist" within earshot of anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the modern musical vanguard and the first name they are most likely to respond with will be Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Still barely in his 30s, the Louisiana-born axeman and songsmith has been selling millions of albums, throwing singles into the Top 10, shining a light on the rich blues of the past and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens. He met Stevie Ray Vaughan at 7, shared the stage with New Orleans legend Bryan Lee at13. As an adult, he continues to create genre-defining blues-infused rock n' roll.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd's 2011 release How I Go not only serves as a strong reminder of the chops that caused Guitar World to place him right behind B.B. King and Eric Clapton on their list of blues guitarists, but it's the strongest indication yet of his gifted songwriting talent. The album pairs Kenny's deeply soulful and impassioned takes on classic material like Bessie Smith's "Backwater Blues," Albert King's "Oh, Pretty Woman" and The Beatles "Yer Blues" alongside the strongest writing and co-writing of his career thus far. Let's not forget that Kenny co-wrote "Blue on Black" very early on. The song was #1 on the Rock Charts for 17 consecutive weeks. All of the accolades heaped upon his playing are well deserved and well earned. But there is so much more to offer.

Ticket prices range from $29.50 to $55.00. Tickets for Club Nokia events are available at all Ticketmaster outlets or online at www.ticketmaster.com and from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM, Mon-Fri at the STAPLES Center Box Office located at 1111 S. Figueroa St.  No fees are charged at the STAPLES Center box office or at the Club Nokia box office on show days (open after 5 PM).

Young Storytellers Foundation YSF is a non-profit program that runs during the school day. They work in Title 1 schools in Los Angeles - which are schools that have a very high percentage of free or reduced price breakfast and lunch which is a key poverty indicator. Each school chooses ten students per session that they feel could benefit from the program (shy children, English language learners, children struggling with ADHD, etc) and those students are paired with 10 professionals from the entertainment industry (actors, writers, agents, development executives). The students and mentors meet for an hour a week for 7 weeks - during which the students each write their own short screenplay. Every idea and word is theirs - the mentors are there to provide encouragement and structure. In the final week, actors from film and television come to the school to perform each script in a performance called The Big Show. The actors audition for the students, the students cast them, and each student sits on stage in a seat of honor to see their script performed. Last year they worked in over 30 local schools and more than 700 students completed an original screenplay (http://youngstorytellers.com/).
